Trade Winds
Collages by Hamish Robertson
Hamish Robertson’s Trade Winds reflects a lifelong fascination with magazines—as both cultural artifact and design object. Drawing from a childhood surrounded by titles like The World of Interiors and Vogue, and later professional years in magazine publishing, Robertson turns to a period outside his own lived experience: a complete year of Electronics magazine issues, published 12 years before he was born. These analog pages are the sole source material for a series of collages that blend historical context with intuitive image-making—reviving the past through layered, tactile compositions.
Hamish Robertson is a British-born artist based in Pasadena, California. Working in photography, collage, painting, and textiles, his practice centers on the assemblage of original and found imagery to explore themes of memory, perception, and the shifting boundaries between the natural and constructed world. A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art, his work has been shown in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Miami.
